Keith Eric presents a variety of dynamic workshops that
help students of all ages appreciate and understand the multi-cultural
world we live in. He also provides teachers with techniques for integrating
music, storytelling, instrument making, rhythm games and dance movements
into the classroom. Keith's engaging teaching style encourages students
to develop their learning and problem solving abilities through creative
thinking.
These workshops include the following:
" History of Jamaican Music: Keith demonstrates how the intermingling
of cultures and environments led to the prolific and diverse musical
styles of Jamaica.
" Performance Technique: In this workshop, students learn to communicate
ideas and emotions while developing aesthetic awareness through music
and lyrics.
" Instrument Making: Here students develop self expression and
cultural understanding while learning to build musical instruments.
" Storytelling: This workshop explores the role of storytelling
in a variety of artistic mediums and cultures.
" Arts in Education: Teachers focus on successfully integrating
music and folk art into their curriculum.
About the Artist:
Keith Eric grew up in Kingston, Jamaica, where he performed with the
Kingston College Choir and sang lead vocals as a member of the Centerboys
Vocal Group. At age 17 he came to the United States to study business
but returned to his pursuit of music, earning a Bachelors of Music degree
from the American Conservatory of Music. In 1984, Keith formed the Waterhouse
band as a vehicle to bring Jamaican music and culture to the youth of
Chicago, performing educational concerts in the public schools. Through
his association with Urban Gateways, he expanded his educational efforts
to include Artist in Residence Workshops, Master classes and Guest Lecturing
activities.
