The group was founded by Mark
Smith in 1982. He has a Masters Degree in Percussion from the American Conservatory
of Music and has traveled to Trinidad several times to study and perform "Pan"
and its music "Calypso." His expertise and experience ensures the authenticity
of the Trinidad tradition, as well as the highest degree of contemporary musical quality and Steel Express continues to perform on the Chicago scene with great vitality. The group performs at various hotels and convention centers, at country clubs, parks, nightclubs and private homes throughout the Midwest, presenting a wide variety of entertainment for festivals, schools, weddings, corporate events, and parties of all kinds.
